TSR Watermark Image vs Visual Watermark
Visual Watermark is the closest thing we have to a direct competitor, and the comparison most people expect us to write is the one we can't: the privacy angle. Visual Watermark is an offline desktop application, the same as ours. Their images stay on the user's machine, the same as ours. Anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
So let's skip that and go through the things that genuinely differ.
The licence
This is the difference that costs or saves you the most money, and it's the one nobody puts in a comparison table.
TSR Watermark Image is a one-time payment and the licence is tied to you, not to a machine. Install it on the desktop, the laptop, the machine in the studio and the old Windows box you keep for exports. That's one purchase covering all of them.
Visual Watermark's single licence covers installation on both Windows and Mac, which is generous in its own way — if you work across both platforms, that matters, and we don't have a Mac build at all. If you're a Windows shop with several machines, our model is the cheaper one. Pick the one that matches your desks.
The guarantee
Ours is 90 days. Theirs is 30.
That's not a marketing flourish, it's a statement about when watermarking software actually fails. Nobody discovers a problem in the first week — you discover it three months in, on the job with 4,000 files and a deadline, when the app runs out of memory or mangles a colour profile or silently drops the metadata. A 30-day window closes before your first real stress test. Ours doesn't.
Metadata
Every paid TSR edition preserves EXIF, XMP and IPTC through the batch. Professional + Share and above also carry GPS, ID3 and the long tail of formats — the full list runs to several hundred tags and is published on our metadata page rather than summarised into a marketing bullet.
This matters more than it sounds. Your IPTC fields are where your name, your copyright notice, your contact details and your licensing terms live. A tool that flattens and re-encodes the image without carrying them across has quietly stripped the machine-readable half of your copyright claim while adding the visible half. You end up worse protected than when you started, and you won't notice, because the watermark is right there in the corner looking reassuring.
If you're comparing any two watermarking tools, run a file with populated IPTC fields through both and inspect the output. That test tells you more than any feature list.
Publishing
TSR Watermark Image uploads finished images straight to WordPress or FTP (Professional + Share), or to secure FTP (Secure Share). Watermark the folder, and the files land on the server. No export step, no second application, no dragging a folder into an FTP client.
If you're a photographer maintaining a WordPress portfolio or a business pushing product shots to a web server on a schedule, this removes an entire manual stage from your week. Visual Watermark has no equivalent.
Automation
TSR Watermark Image takes a saved configuration on the command line:
WatermarkImage.exe "C:\configs\portfolio-web.wmi"It runs the batch and exits. Put that in a scheduled task, a batch file, or the tail end of whatever script already moves your files around, and watermarking stops being something you remember to do.
This is a small audience and we know it. But if you're in it, it's decisive, and Visual Watermark doesn't offer it.
Where they're ahead, and where we tie
Be sceptical of comparison pages that find no weaknesses, so here are ours.
Visual Watermark has a Mac build and an Android app. We don't. If you're on macOS, this comparison is already over and you should buy theirs.
Their font and template library is larger out of the box. We ship 225 watermark fonts with Professional + Share and support any TrueType font installed on your system, which in practice means you can use anything — but theirs is more curated.
Both trials stamp the output. Ours adds "Unregistered TSR Watermark Image" to trial results; theirs adds "Trial Version". Neither of us is being sneaky about it, and neither trial is crippled in any other way — the trial is the full application in both cases.
Both work offline. Both keep your files on your machine. Genuinely a tie.
