TSR Watermark Image vs MakeWatermark

MakeWatermark is a browser tool with 900+ fonts, 65 effects, batch processing, tiling, and automatic sizing for different orientations. It states that "your photos never even reach our servers... they are processed in your browser."

Of the browser-based tools we've looked at, it's the closest to ours on features. So this comparison is narrower than the others, and we'll be straight about it.

The privacy question is a tie

MakeWatermark processes client-side. Your files aren't uploaded. On the specific question of "does my photograph go to a stranger's server", the answer is no for both of us.

Anyone who tells you every online watermarking tool uploads your photos is wrong, and MakeWatermark is the proof.

The one distinction we'd draw is between a claim and a property. In-browser processing is a statement about JavaScript you can't audit, in a page that can change between visits. An installed application is testable: pull the network cable, watermark 500 files, watch it finish. If you ever need to demonstrate to a client that their images never left your machine, the second one is what you can show them.

That's a real distinction, but it's a narrow one, and we're not going to inflate it.

Where the differences actually are

Metadata. Every paid TSR edition preserves EXIF, XMP and IPTC — your embedded copyright notice, creator name and contact details survive the batch. Share editions and above also carry GPS, ID3 and several hundred further tag groups. Before trusting any tool with work that matters, put a file with populated IPTC fields through it and inspect the output. Most re-encode and drop everything.

Automation. A saved profile runs from the command line:

Batch runs, application exits. That drops into Task Scheduler or the end of an existing script. Nothing in a browser tab can be scheduled.

Publishing. Finished images upload straight to WordPress, FTP or secure FTP. No export, no second application.

3D and embossed watermarks, using the photograph itself as a depth map so the mark is carved into the image rather than laid over it.

Dynamic text — EXIF values, file information, or an incrementing serial number written into the watermark itself.

Multipage TIF, read and written page by page.

Volume. No batch limit on paid editions; one customer ran over 8,000 TIF files in a single pass. Browser tools are bounded by tab memory, and full-resolution TIFs find that boundary quickly.

Originals protected. The application refuses to use your source folder as the destination. Watermarking can't be undone, so we don't allow it in place.

The question nobody asks about free tools

MakeWatermark is free and shows no obvious business model.

That's not an accusation — plenty of good tools are built by people who just wanted to build them. But it's worth asking what happens next, because free tools have three normal outcomes: they add ads, they add a paid tier with the free one cut back, or they quietly stop being maintained and one day the domain doesn't resolve.

If your watermarking workflow is a website, your workflow is only as durable as someone else's hosting bill.
